Socceroos goalkeeper Mathew Ryan and former keeper Mark Schwarzer talk to Hatch about how they think the Matildas will go at the World Cup.
Ryan plays for Brighton in the English Premier League and has been a Socceroo since 2012. Schwarzer, one of Australia’s most decorated players, won the English Premier League title with Leicester City three years ago. Both players have been pivotal in the Socceroos success.
How do you think the Matildas are going to go in Group C against Italy, Brazil and Jamaica?
Ryan: “There is every reason they can do well against those opponents, they have proven that recently with their successes and their style of play.”
“I know their last two matches they haven’t got the results they wanted but when it comes to performing on the world stage they will raise their game and come out and make Australia proud.”
Schwarzer: “They will progress but have to be very careful v Italy in their first game. It’s a must win.”
Will you be watching the tournament and showing your support for the girls?
Ryan: “Definitely will be watching when I can and it’s great to be back in Australia for the first game, so I can be a part of that atmosphere.”
“Obviously it will be easier once I’m back in Brighton with the time difference so I’ll be following it closely.”
Which teams do you believe will be key threats to the Matilda’s in the tournament?
Schwarzer: “France as host nation have some very talented players. Brazil, Germany and Norway….Spain are my dark horses.”
The Socceroos, alongside all of Australia will be watching on hoping for the girls to bring home the silverware Sunday 9th June 9pm (AEST) against Italy.
